I hope the New Year is off to a great start for everyone. As I discussed in my most recent blog post, and as I'm sure you're aware, 2020 was a difficult year for the music industry. In particular, the live music industry was brought to its knees due
to the pandemic. For many musicians that depend on playing gigs to earn a living, 2020 was a challenging year.
Unfortunately, I don't think the pandemic is going to end anytime soon. I don't have a crystal ball, but I was talking to my Mom last night who is a medical doctor and she said we're going to be dealing with this for the foreseeable future. Likely for the next few years to some extent. Now of course my Mom doesn't have a crystal ball either. No one knows exactly how long it will be until we get back to "normal" and things like live music resume on a
wide scale. But even best case scenario predictions are that we will be dealing with this throughout 2021. That's the bad news.
The good news is that, as I pointed out in my most recent blog post, licensing and publishing revenue actually saw an increase in 2020 over 2019. Music licensing and publishing was the one silver lining in what was mostly bad news for the music industry in 2020.
From my perspective, this period of time, as challenging as it is, is all about growth and learning to adapt to the changing times we're living through. In retrospect, I feel like on a personal level I adapted well to the challenges 2020 presented. But it wasn't always easy. I had to make a lot of changes to stay afloat.
I really strive to be the best resource and source of education and information I can be for musicians who are trying to break into licensing. It's been a labor of love that has lasted over 12 years now. I feel, now more than ever, a duty to keep presenting the information and knowledge I've accumulated over the last 20 years or so, to anyone who is interested in learning about licensing.
As my way of saying thanks to all of you who have been reading my newsletter, blogs, watching my videos and listening to my podcast and so on, I've put together a special package of three of How To License Your Music dot com's most essential resources, including the new 2021 Music Licensing Directory, when it's released on January 15.
