This is a question I get all the time when I’m doing coaching sessions with clients: How long is it going to take to go full time? It’s an understandable question. If you’re embarking on a new career path it’s helpful to at least have an idea of how long it’s going to take to succeed. But, of course, the music business and music
licensing is not a typical career and the path it takes to become successful doesn’t really follow a predictable pattern. Embarking on a career in music is very different that embarking on a more conventional career, like becoming a doctor or lawyer, where there is a well laid out path to success.
It’s a hard question to answer because there are so many variables and questions; How long have you been making music? How many tracks do you have right now that are ready to be licensed? What kind of music do you make? How motivated are you? How many contacts do you have in the business? How hard are you willing to work on
a regular basis? Are you going to be as motivated as you are now a year from now? Two years from now? Five years from now? Do you have a plan for transitioning to full time? Can you pay your bills while your working hard to establish yourself in the business and wait for things to come to fruition?
There isn’t really a one size fits all approach to licensing. But there are examples of people who have done it and are doing it. Success, like Tony Robbins says, leaves clues. In my experience, and the experience of many others that are doing music licensing full time, it usually takes two to three years of consistent effort to see
significant results. It takes time to create a viable catalog of music, make the necessary connections and generate enough placements to generate significant revenue. Like most businesses, it takes time to create a viable music licensing business. Of course you can earn money from your music along the way, but it takes time to turn licensing into a full time, consistent revenue stream.
I think in the beginning, it’s actually more productive to not even worry about how long it’s going to take to succeed. It’s much more productive to simply focus on the process of doing the work. Keep showing up and creating new tracks, building connections and so on. Eventually the results will come. But when you’re overly
worried or concerned about how long it’s going to take to succeed, it can be counter-productive in my experience.
I recently was watching a podcast with Joe Rogan where he was discussing his 100 million dollar Spotify deal. He was talking to comedian Kevin Hart and they were talking about the mindset necessary to succeed and Joe said something I’ve heard
echoed many times from successful artists and entrepreneurs, which is that he never really thought or worried that much about success or making money, he just focused on showing up every day and doing the work. Eleven years of showing up every day and putting in the work on his podcast and clearly it’s paid off.
This is the perfect mindset for licensing. If you show up every day and put in the work, eventually the rewards will come. It might not make you as rich as Joe Rogan, but if you put in the work you’ll reap the rewards. How long it will take and how much you’ll earn, is different from case to case, based on a lot of variables. But the
one thing I can say with certainty is that if you do nothing, you’ll get nothing.
