One of the hardest parts about successfully licensing your music full time is getting started. I'm convinced that one of the main reasons more musicians don't succeed at licensing is that they burn out and give up before they've really had a chance to build the momentum and traction they need to turn licensing into a
full time endeavor.
It takes time to get started in the licensing business. It takes time to create a large enough catalog that it's sustainable. It takes time to build up the connections and contacts you need. And once everything is in place, it takes time to start getting placements and to build up a sustainable revenue stream from licensing.
Half the battle is simply awareness. If you're aware of how the business works and what the process typically looks like from observing other composers and writers that are succeeding at music licensing, you'll know what to expect and what to watch out for on your own journey.
I just posted a video on my Youtube channel from a recent conversation I had with TV Composer Anthony Clint JR on what his journey to music licensing success was like and how he managed to keep going during the initial phase when things were slow going.
