FAQs About The California Dreaming Retreat

Published: Mon, 09/11/17

Due to the crazy weather parts of the US and other places in the world have been experiencing lately, we've extended the deadline to register for the upcoming "California Dreaming" retreat until this Tuesday, September 12th.

Register today or tomorrow here: http://www.californiadreamingretreat.com/

Speaking of the retreat, we've been getting a lot of great questions about the event and what to expect by attending.  My producer, Gary Gray, who is co-hosting the retreat with me, put together a list of the most frequently asked questions and their answers.

Here they are....

Q: Are there two Retreats in September?

A: Yes. However, the September 23rd/24th Retreat is SOLD OUT. There are still a few spots available for the September 16th/17th Retreat. But the Deadline to secure a spot is September 12th at Midnight, California Time.

Q: Will I be able to receive one-on-one mentoring on the subject of Music Production for Licensing?

A: Yes. That’s the biggest reason we’ve kept the number of seats for each retreat to ten (10) only. You’ll also be getting individual mentoring and coaching on your mixing and mastering via email and/or phone prior to the retreat -- so that you are fully prepared once you get here. You will be asked to fill out a very detailed survey which will help you pintpoint your strengths and weaknesses in the areas of music production for licensing and on the business side of music licensing. This will help us customize your one-on-one mentoring time to your individual needs.

Q: If I buy a ticket to the Skype live-stream will I be able to pitch any of my tracks and get instant feedback from a Music Supervisor?

A: Absolutely!  (By the way, Everyone who gets a ticket - to the live-stream OR attending in-person in California - will get the video replay. So if you can't make it live, you can watch it at a later time) But getting back to pitching your tracks: If you attend live, you will have the opportunity to pitch three of your tracks face-to-face to a pro Music Supervisor from LA, and receive instant feedback. This is an active Pro Music Supervisor who is in the position to place music into films, television, video games and commercials if they consider the music relevant to their needs. If you attend via the Skype live-stream, you’ll be able to pitch one track directly to a pro Music Supervisor from LA, with instant feedback.  More info on our scheduled guests here:

Q: Why should I attend The California Dreaming Retreat live?

A: If you attend in-person in California, you will not only be able to network with other attendees, but with music executives as well. We have set aside time after each individual event for networking and business card exchanges.

p.s. I wanted to tell you a very short story about a similar presentation I delivered last month. I was asked to give a presentation to the Electronic Music Producers Association in California (3rd year in a row) The response I got afterwards was overwhelming. People were telling me they've never gotten so much up-to-the-minute useful real-life insight into music production and the business side of licensing. You really need both in order to succeed.  One key point I stress is that as a priority, a person needs to upgrade themselves and their ability to listen accurately and objectively to their own mixes and to be able to mix in any environment, and not prioritize upgrading their gear. As I put it, "use your ear, more than your gear, to guide your mixes." And I show them exactly how to do just that. I received this email last week from a producer/engineer who attended:

"Hi Gary, Thank you very much for speaking and enlightening so many people!

I felt a lot of them were personally touched and some were speechless and nodding through your presentation. It's almost as if some of them inherently knew the truth but had those thoughts buried under layers of perception and falsehoods. You cleaned off the misconceptions and brought that truth back into the light for them to see! Very powerful and touching for everyone. Have a great weekend, Bob"
