The Habit Of Success

One of the main things that separates successful people from un-successful people are the habits they have. Successful people have habits and actions they engage in every day that over time make them more and more successful. Conversely, people that are chronically unsuccessful have habits they engage in every day that make sure they continue to stay “stuck” or even cause them to move backwards in life.

All of our situations are different.  Some of us have life circumstances that are more challenging than others.  Some of us were born into more affluent families than others.  Some of us have had better role models than others along the way that have influenced our lives in positive ways.  Some of us may have had negative influences and bad role models throughout our lives that influences us to make bad decisions.

But… the factor that we ALL ultimately have control over, regardless of our past and the things we’ve gone through in life, are the choices we make every day, in other words, our habits.  There’s a quote I like that is often attributed to Gandhi (among others), I’m not sure who said it originally, but either way it’s pretty powerful.  It goes like this:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

One of my main themes throughout my books and courses, is the idea of taking consistent action every day that will lead to the realization of your goals.  We all have the same amount of hours in the day and we all have the same ability to make choices that will move us in the direction of our dreams. In a way, our lives are the sum total of all the choices we’ve made up to this point.  If you don’t like where you are in life now, take a good hard look at the choices you’ve made up to this point.  Conversely, if you’re happy with where you are now, or with certain areas of your life, think about the choices you’ve made up to this point that have led you to where you are.  Either way, it’s pretty easy to look back at our lives and connect the dots between the habits we have and where we’ve arrived in life.

Success in music, as in any industry, requires hard work.  It requires developing the right habits that over time will lead to success.  Pursuing a career in music is in many ways “taking the road less travelled”.  I think most musicians have a certain disdain for the corporate world and are looking for a path that is more meaningful and noble.  I know that the desire for living a more authentic, “hear centered” life was a big factor in my decision to become a musician.

However, pursuing a more meaningful and authentic life doesn’t equate to living an easier life.  There are no free rides.  If you want to become successful in any endeavor you’re going to have to work hard, unless you’re extraordinarily lucky.  In fact, you’ll probably have to work even harder when you truly follow your heart.  The system, if you will, is set up to support its’ own agenda, which doesn’t really care that much about you following the authentic call of your heart.

The good news though, is that when you are truly in tune with your dreams and your passions, you’re more than willing to put in the extra work required to reach your goals.  When you’re driven by passion and following your dreams, what others perceive as hard work seems like fun.  I think that one the reasons that “work” is so un-enjoyable for so many, is that there are simply other things we’d rather be doing.  But if you’re doing what you’re most driven to do, you’re doing that thing that you most want to be doing and even the “boring” and “redundant” aspects of pursuing your goals become enjoyable.

If licensing your music is one of your goals, join me in The 90 Day Music Licensing Challenge starting next Monday.  This three month long course is designed to turn your idea of licensing music into concrete actions that will become habits that will result in success.  The course only takes about a half hour a day, and I’m so confident that you’ll get results that if you go through the entire program and feel like you haven’t moved closer to your goals as a result of my program, I’ll give you your money back.
