Is Music Licensing A Numbers Game?
I often like to say that music licensing is a numbers
game. There are so many variables involved in getting one song licensed that
you are more than likely going to have to take a few swings until you "hit one
out of the park." Getting your music licensed is often about the right song,
being at the right place, at the right time. There's a lot out of your control.
However, music licensing is a numbers game in the same
way that dating is a numbers game. Although, it's true that you might have to
kiss a few "frogs" before you find your prince or princess, there's still a lot
you can do to affect the outcome. How
you dress, how you speak, places you frequent and the company you keep will all
make a big difference when it comes to meet and attracting a mate.
In the same way, there are many things you can do to
increase your chances of getting your music licensed and making it less of a
number game. The quality of your productions, how you present yourself and your
music, who you present your music to and of course the music itself, all
contribute greatly to whether or not you successfully license your music.
By focusing on and improving the things you can control
and letting go of the rest, you'll exponentially increase your success. Although it may still feel like a bit of a
numbers game while you're waiting for good news about your music, it will start
to feel less and less so, and you'll realize that ultimately, the only person
who can guarantee your success is you.
