I work with
and coach a lot of musicians who seem to be looking for a shortcut to getting
their music licensed. They want to know
what the quickest and easiest way is to get their music licensed. As if there is some sort of secret door that
if they knew about they could simply open and walk through and magically have
their music licensed. I don't know of
any door. I'm pretty sure it doesn't
exist. However, that's not to say that
licensing your music isn't possible or attainable for musicians who are willing
to work hard. Of course it is. Thousands of musicians are licensing and
making money from their music every day. But there isn't necessarily an "easy"
way to go about it.
It reminds
of people who are interested in learning how to make money online. In researching how to go about creating my
own website and build my own business, I've spent quite a bit of time in forums
dedicated to internet business and internet marketing and it amuses me how
people will ask things like "How Can I Make Two Thousand Dollars By Next
Tuesday?" or "What Is The Easiest Way To Make Fifty Thousand Dollars A Month?".
It's not that either of these things
are impossible, but if there was some sort of secret formula for doing this...
well it wouldn't remain a secret for long!
When it
comes to making money online, there are a variety of methods and ways of
generating money. There isn't
necessarily an "easy" way or a shortcut, even though there are a lot of people
who try to tell you (for a price) there is. Instead, what there are, are a lot
of different ways and methods to make money and they all take work and effort
to execute properly. Depending on the
nature of the business one is starting, some will work better or make more sense
than others. It's up to the business
owner to decipher all the information that is out there and put together a
system that works for his or her own unique situation.
In the same
way, there isn't a one size fits all answer that will work for everyone when it
comes to licensing your music. I can't
tell you to do a, b and c for six weeks and then you are definitely all set,
guaranteed. Instead, what I can give
you, and what I aim to provide with my site and resources, are a set of tools
that will allow you to move forward in the business more efficiently and
painlessly. How you apply and put the
information I provide to work is up to you and will depend on your situation,
what kind of music you make, who you build relationships with and a variety of
other factors.
Although there
isn't a shortcut to licensing your music, there are definitely some approaches
that work better than others and there is information that if you're aware of
will greatly expedite your progress.
This week I'll be focusing on giving you as many practical tips as
possible to getting your music licensed.
My next post will focus on what I think is the closest thing to a
formula that I know of for getting your music licensed. It's not a magic bullet per se, but it's a
path that I've seen work for a lot of writers and provides a structure for getting
started in the business of licensing music.
