I'm currently
working on a new course on how to pitch music directly to supervisors. I created the course with Joseph Miller who
works as a music coordinator for CBS Sports and also works as an independent
music supervisor.
During the
course Joseph covered a lot of ground about how to approach music supervisors,
how to know when your music is ready to be pitched, how to find supervisors and
much more. This is the first course I've
created specifically on how to pitch music to supervisors as opposed to music
libraries, music publishers and so on. I'll
have more details about our course coming soon.
One of the
topics that came up during the course was the need to create different versions
of your mixes. I address this topic in a
few of my programs but Joseph takes this idea even further and suggests that
writers create even more alternate mixes to cover as many bases as
possible. Here are the mixes Joseph
suggests you create:
1) Regular mix with vocals (for vocal
songs)
2) Instrumental mix
3) Mix with vocals down
4) Mix with drums and bass only
5) Mixes with different combinations of
instruments (For example if your track has guitar and piano, create one mix
with guitar only, another with piano only and so on)
Basically
the idea is since it really only takes a few minutes to mute a track and create
a different mix, go ahead and create multiple versions when you're in the
process of mixing and bouncing your tracks.
You might never get a request for these alternate versions, but you
might, and the more prepared you are going into licensing deals the better off
you'll be.
