How To Have A Wildly Crazy Successful 2013!

Published: Tue, 01/01/13

I've been giving a lot of thought to what I want to accomplish this year.  I always tend to do this and unlike a lot of people, I totally believe in the power of writing new year's resolutions.   There's something powerful about putting pen to paper and writing out your goals.  The trick is to not just do this once a year, but to do this throughout the entire year.

I've been a believer of goal setting for a long time.  Having really clear goals helps to focus the mind and gives us something concrete and tangible to focus on. It's really hard to get where we want to go if we don't even know where we want to go.  Goal setting and making resolutions helps us gain a clearer understanding of the areas we want to improve on.

But the problem with goal setting and making resolutions is that a lot of people make goals and write out new year's resolutions but simply fail to follow through on them.  Maybe they make a concerted effort in the beginning, but after awhile they get busy and simply slip back into old ways of behaving and living.  Why?  Is it because people are too lazy and lack will power? I think that's part of it.  But I think the bigger problem is that often times people simply have goals that are too vague and abstract.  People make goals like "get healthier" or "become a rock star".   These are fine as a starting point, but to be really effective, your goals need to be more tangible.  Maybe something like "go to the gym 3 times a week" or "play 100 shows this year".   Now, of course there's still a chance you'll fail to follow through on these goals, but at least by being very specific in your goal setting you'll have something specific to accomplish.  It's easier to maintain a resolution if you have something specific and attainable to aim for.

Do Something Every Day
Now I'll be honest and confess that I've fallen victim to this sort of abstract goal setting before.  One of the most important things I've realized in terms of goal setting is that we can't control the outcome of our actions, we can only control our actions.  So instead of focusing our goals on things outside of our direct control and setting goals like "become a rock star" or "sell 10,000 CDs this year", it's much more powerful to focus on things we can directly control.  For example a goal of "I will submit my music to one new record label a day for an entire year" or " I will submit my music to one licensing opportunity a day for 90 days".   These types of goals are totally in your control and if you're determined enough you can accomplish these types of goals and by taking this sort of consistent action you will move forward to your bigger goals.

The problem with setting a goal like "I will sell 10,000 Cds this year" is that this sort of goal is dependent on factors outside of your control, in this case getting 10,000 different people to buy your CD.  It's not that it's a bad goal, it's just that it's not focused on anything you can control directly.  It's much more powerful to have a goal like "I will make one new interesting video a day of my music and post it on youtube".   This is a goal you can actually control and could very well lead to more CD sales if you are good enough, creative enough, etc.   It's like having a goal to get a beautiful girlfriend or trophy husband but ignoring the fact that you're 50 pounds overweight, dress poorly and have bad breath.  It's much more powerful to focus on changing the one thing you can, yourself and your actions.

So.... what are your goals this year?  What sort of concrete actions can you start taking that will lead you closer to where you want to be?  Don't worry about setting goals that are outside of your control, focus instead on taking the actions you need to take that will get you closer to your desired outcome.

I've been hearing from more and more people who have taken one of my courses and gone on to have success licensing their music. Here's what people are saying about my program:

Hi Aaron,

My name is Alexy, a Canadian recording artist/producer from Montreal. I'm emailing you today to thank you for your 90 day challenge program, which I participated in last year and through which I have successfully created a great deal of industry connections and contacts, as well as having one of my songs placed in three episodes of a new Nickelodeon series called "Hollywood Heights". I have since recommended your program to many other artists seeking to get their foot in the door when it comes to licensing. I am very great-full for your work, because without it I would not have the knowledge and opportunities I have today.

Alexy

Aaron,

I want to thank you for your program.  Your tutorials and information has led to a placement in a film "Living Will" starring Ryan Dunn of "Jackass".   It was due to the the steps and information you provided that helped with this placement.  I will use your program as a Music Licensing Bible.

Thanks Aaron.

" I wanted to let you know that I've been following your 90 day program for the last  21 days and already got a song placement for a European national TV commercial. I submitted 5 songs on the 20th of May for this particular library and got a placement and a track usage report on the 24th of May. They took my 2:52 song and are making a 30 second commercial out of it...totally cool! You are the best, my friend.
