A variety of music is used in TV shows and Films. In fact, just about every conceivable genre of music is used at one point or another. Every single piece of music that is heard in the background during TV shows and Films is licensed from someone. Vocal music, instrumental music, jazz, rock, blues.... you name it, it all has a place in the context of music licensing.
If you`re writing songs with vocals, a great subject matter to starting writing about is relationships. This is because so many stories are relationship driven. And since songs are used to support the scenes, songs that are about relationships will fit within a wide variety of possible scenes and will therefore have a greater chance of getting placed.
But there are in fact many styles and a variety of subjects that are used as well, and if you listen closely to songs being used as background material you will also hear a lot of instrumental, atmospheric type music that is used to support the overall mood of the scene. Acoustic guitar, classical piano, new age music... you hear it all.
If you're serious about getting involved in the business start taking notes over the next few days as you watch TV as to what type of music you hear being used. This will give you a great idea as to both the demand for different styles and how music is used in the context of licensing.
