Licensing Instrumental Music

Published: Fri, 04/22/11

In the context of music licensing, there are opportunities to license both instrumental and vocal music.  Some production libraries only work with instrumental music, some only work with vocal music and many places work with both. It's a simple matter of doing a little research and figuring out who needs what and submitting your music accordingly. Instrumental placements tend to generate less in performance royalties as they are usually considered background music, which pays less than vocal music that is featured more prominently.

Whether you specialize in instrumental music or not, it's a good idea to always have an instrumental version of each of your songs on hand when you're shopping them around for licensing opportunities. Occasionally songs will be licensed and either the vocal will be re-cut or the instrumental version of the song will be used instead of the vocal version.  It's fairly common for music libraries and music publishers to request instrumental versions in addition to versions with vocals. So be prepared for these different potential scenarios by having an instrumental version of your songs ready to go!
