Licensing Your Music In Commercials Part 2
Licensing your music in commercials can be very lucrative. Whereas songs licensed in TV shows can pay as little as nothing upfront (with royalties only being generated on the backend) to several thousand dollars. Songs licensed in commercials pay a lot more. Why? Simple. Bigger budgets. TV shows tend to license a lot of music, and depending on the show, their budgets vary greatly.
In commercials it's not uncommon for artists to be compensated as much as $50,000 for one song in one commercial. Sometimes it's less and sometimes it's more. But in general these types of placements pay a lot more.
And it gets even better, because in addition to getting paid more upfront, commercials also generate a lot more in backend royalties due to their frequency of use. My last TV placement was for use of one of my songs on daytime network television. About a minute and a half of my song was used. I haven't received my ASCAP check yet but based on past payments, I'm expecting payment to be somewhere in the thousand dollar range. Now imagine a scenario where 30 seconds or so of your song is used in a commercial that airs repeatedly every day for several months, as is typically the case with commercials. These types of royalties adds up fast.
Is licensing your music in commercials worth looking into? I'd say so!
