I've been having a lot of success lately promoting one of my side music projects via a podcast I created on Itunes. I actually created the podcasts and all of the content about a year ago and I have been getting consistent residual checks from Itunes ever since that have been gradually increasing. Today I want to share how I set it up and how you can do the same.
The particular CD that I created the podcast for was inspired by several different specific authors and philosophers and I released the CD anomysously using a pseudonym. After I recorded the CD I created a podcast that was aimed at discussing different issues that the music addressed and then ended each podcast with one of the songs from my CD that corresponded with the subject matter of that particular podcast. I ended each podcast with information about the CD and how they could purchase the music featured in my podcasts via Itunes. I recorded a dozen or so of these podcasts and then uploaded them to Itunes.
It did take a little work to set all this up, but like I said it's been over a year and I'm seeing consistent money that has been growing from this project every two months via Tunecore (they distribute Itunes payments). If you don't already have your music on Itunes Sign Up for a Free TuneCore Account
to get your music listed in the Itunes marketplace.
My goal with my music is to create as many passive revenue streams as possible that will continue to grow over time. At this point I'm not even concerned with the idea of getting a record deal. I'm having way too much fun doing things myself. I might not become a household name this way but I am able to make a living and do things completely on my own terms, which feels right to me. I've always hated the idea of having a boss and from what I hear record label execs can be pretty bossy.
Promoting my music via podcasts is just one of many ideas I got after reading the book, Music Marketing Manifesto, written by a friend of mine, Interscope recording artist John Oszajca.
John has written what I consider to be the best book available on internet marketing as it relates specifically to marketing music. I've actually thought about writing a book about this topic myself, but John has done such a fine job I've decided to instead just refer people to John's book. I´m a huge advocate of musicians taking their careers into their own hands in order to generate an income from music and deriving income from marketing your music online should not be overlooked.
John's book is called the Music Marketing Manifesto. It´s filled with great strategies for marketing your music on the internet, generating tons of traffic and most importantly how to sell your music. check it out here
Until Next Time... Happy Songwriting,
