A Strategy For Marketing Your Music Online
Today's strategy for marketing your music online comes courtesy of my friend, John Oszajca's book "Music Marketing Manifesto".
John makes a lot of money online and much of that comes from marketing his music. His approach to selling his music is different from most musicians I know. John thinks like an internet marketer when it comes to marketing his music and as a result he sells a lot more music than most indie musicians I know.
John employs a lot of marketing techniques in order to sell a ton of music. One of the most effective strategies which he uses, and talks about in The Music Marketing Manifesto, is using what's called a "landing page" to capture his fans email addresses so that he has the ability to communicate with his fans over and over.
A landing page is a page that your prospective fans and customers go to and give you their email address in exchange, usually, for some sort of gift for signing up. If you're on my newsletter this is the page you went to when you signed up to receive my newsletter. If you're using this technique to market your music you could offer a free download or even a free ep of your music in exchange for someone's email address. This allows you the ability to communicate with your fans on a regular basis in order to keep them abreast of everything that's going on with you and your music.
A lot of musicians already use some sort of an email newsletter to let fans know about upcoming shows, and that's great you should keep doing that if you already are. But this approach is different in that you're using your newsletter to ultimately sell your music and by offering some sort of an incentive to get fans to sign up you will grow a much larger list, which will help you with both promoting your shows and marketing your music.
