Get Your Music In TV and Films And Help The Economy

Published: Tue, 03/17/09

Hi ,

Unless you´re living under a rock or have absolutely no social contact with other people and have no access to any sort of news outlets, than clearly you are familiar with the economic situation that the US and other parts of the world are currently dealing with.   Personally I'm limiting my intake of this kind of news to no more than about fifteen minutes a day.  I make an effort to stay informed but at the same time I refuse to buy into the hysteria the media is selling us and get myself all worked up into a frenzy.

Clearly there are some "real" events that have contributed to the market and housing situation that are having very real consequences.  BUT... how we deal with what's happening psychologically is largely a matter of personal choice.  And of course each one of our personal choices effects us collectively.  For example, if we all panic and stop spending money then the business we choose not to buy from will then have limited purchasing power which will then cause their employees to limit their spending and on and on....  It's a terrible and vicious cycle!

I realize I'm getting a little heavy and slightly off topic and you might be asking what the heck this has to do with music licensing.  Well it has a couple things to do with the music licensing business.  Number one it's important to realize that historically in tough economic times the entertainment business has consistently thrived.  Why?  Well when times are tough economically people need an "escape" more than ever.  More and more families are simply staying home on the weekends and cocooning during these tough economic times. TV shows aren't going to stop producing shows because credit is limited or housing values have declined.  And conversely TV shows aren't going to stop needing good independently produced music for their productions.  If anything, if their budgets are effected they will most likely use MORE freelance artists in lieu of expensive established artists, not less!  The same can be said for the motion picture industry which has historically thrived during recessions as well.

Secondly I think in many ways this is a great opportunity for musicians for a couple reasons.  Why? Well during recessions people tend to get more conservative in their thinking. They tend to look for safe decisions with regards to employment, and understandbly so.  I realize how difficult these times are for many.  But with said, the world isn´t going to stop needing music and musicians, and my personal feeling is that if you can ride this difficult period out and stay motivated your chances for success are only going to increase.  Like all industries, the music industry will have a number of participants that simply stop participating and this will thin out the competition and make it easier for those who are really skilled and determined to succeed.  Those are my thoughts.  What do you think?

Finally, I've decided to discount the directory of contact information I sell with contacts for the TV and Film music industry to only $14.95 (normally the cost is $19.95) from now until the end of this week.  A part of me is reluctant to do this because I think the information is a lot more valuable than fifteen dollars and I don't know of any other place you can get an industry directory this comprehensive for close to this price.  But I realize that times are tough for some of us and I want everyone to have access to this information that wants it.
