Registering Your Titles

Published: Mon, 01/05/09

In order to get paid performance royalties when you license your songs for use in TV you need to register your songs with whatever performing rights organization you belong to.  TV shows submit what are called cue sheets to performing rights organizations that list what songs are used.  This assures that the creator of the song being broadcast is compensated through what's known as a performance royalty.  If your working with a music publisher, your publisher will generally register your titles for you.

The three main performing rights organizations in the US are:

Ascap - www.ascap.com
BMI - www.bmi.com
Sesac - www.sesac.com
