The Economy, Music Licensing And The Ever Changing Music Business

Published: Tue, 01/29/08

Hi ,

Yesterday I finished Eric Clapton's autobiography that was recently released.  It's a great book and Clapton's life is a great story with many twists and turns.  In the epilogue Clapton echoes a sentiment about the music industry that I've been hearing more and more recently - that in the next few years, record labels as we know them, will cease to exist, but that musicians and music will always live on and find a way to be heard.

I agree with his opinion on the music industry.  It is no doubt changing and in many ways the way the music industry is changing is actually very positive for musicians.  I believe that one of the reasons major label record sales have been declining is that there actually more and more independent artists emerging on the scene that are grabbing a significant slice of the entertainment dollars being spent.  This is something that author Chris Anderson refers to as the "long tail" of the music business.

So perhaps for the first time in history, the playing field in the music business is more level than it's ever been.  This isn't to say that success is easy to attain in the industry, but it is more readily attainable for those willing to put in the required effort than ever before.

As you probably know, one of the areas I strongly to encourage musicians to become more active in is music licensing.  It's a business that is ripe with opportunities for independent musicians to gain exposure and get paid.  Musicians in this day and age need to to play an ACTIVE role in getting their careers off the ground and this one niche that I think all musicians should be pursuing.

I have several products that I've designed that will help you break into the music licensing business.  I have been very successful in licensing my own music over the years and I'm delighted to be able to share this information with others.  This week only I'm offering a discount on both the 2008 TV/ Film Music Business Directory and The How To Program/Directory

Why am I discounting these products?  Well as much as I try to avoid the news I keep hearing talk about how the economy is in trouble.  I'm no economist but I know that the two keys to a healthy, vibrant economy are people making money and people spending money.  My products are a great value at the full price (let alone the discounted price) and if you're proactive and ready to take your career to the next level they will help you MAKE MONEY.   That should be at least one of your goals in buying my products.

If you're already pretty business savvy and you have songs that you feel are high quality and ready to be pitched, all you'll need is the directory.  It has over 125 listings and is updated regularly.  When you buy the directory you get free updates for life.  It's a great directory and I  use it myself on a regular basis!

If you want a comprehensive understanding of how the music licensing business works as well as information about the "how to" aspects of getting started in the business then you should get my How To Program, which also comes with the directory.  This program walks you through the steps I took to get started and shows you how you can do the same.  It also covers some of the more technical aspects of the business, including different types of deals you'll encounter.

And if you're really serious about breaking into the business, I also offer music business coaching.  I only take on several clients a month as that's all I have time for.  I'll work with you to develop a SPECIFIC plan you can follow to get move your career forward.  I only have room for TWO more clients in February, so be sure to sign up this week if you're interested.

Until Next Time...

Good luck and Happy Songwriting!
